A Short Tour of Murray Hill

Bagels:

There are a lot of bagel shops in the area. I used to go to Daniel’s Bagels a lot. In fact each year I would host a champagne brunch after the Susan G. Koman walk for the cure for about 40 people in my apartment and would always get my bagels and cream cheese at Daniels. It’s a short walk from the apartment.

The Bagelry was also great. I would often go there order some coffee and sit and read my newspaper...now I read my Iphone…

Supermarkets:

There’s a D’Agostino on 3^rd Ave just a couple of blocks from the apartment. There’s also Gristedes which I like since they have a nice take-out section.

There are lots of great grocery stores. My favorite was The Grand Central Market. It has the best of everything from cheese, fish, meats, desserts, flowers and so much more. This is another place I would go to for any parties I was having.

Also a must go to is Todaro Brothers on 2^nd Avenue the best take out and fresh produce and other things Italian. Great Italian bread…

Movie Theaters

The one I would go to is the AMC Kipps Bay - 2^nd Avenue and 33^rd Street. It’s large is has about 15 movies going at one time.

Museum:

The Morgan Library Museum on 36^th Street off Madison is lovely and it is a great place for a lovely lunch that is quite reasonable. I would meet clients there all the time http://www.themorgan.org/home.asp. It’s one of the best kept secrets in NYC.

Starbucks:

The closest one is on 2^nd Avenue and 33^rd Street and you can sit all day if you like.

Restaurants:

This is such a great restaurant neighborhood. There are all varieties of restaurants. I would go to dinner by myself many times and bring my newspaper or a book and have dinner.

Some of my favorites were:

The Water Club: this was great especially in the nice weather when the outdoor is open.

Sarge’s Deli and Restaurant one of the best delis in NYC

El Parador Café really good Mexican/Spanish

Better Burger

The Jazz Standard was great for not only dinner but listening to some great jazz

La Petite Auberge lovely little French bistro

Da Ciro Italian restaurant

Hudson Place a great place for lunch, dinner and brunch

Chef 28 on 28^th St. is really good Chinese but there are so many good Chinese places

Villa Berulia I would eat there a lot. In fact when I was on match.com I would meet all my dates there. The owner must have thought I was “turning tricks” for awhile!

Wild Edibles - great seafood!

There are lots more all within walking distance…

Diners:

I would also eat at the Gemini diner which is right across the street. When I wanted just comfort food I would just order the mashed potatoes with gravy. My man swears by their pea soup. I know - pretty bad - but it was great.

Dry Cleaners:

There’s a dry cleaner I used right around the block. They also do laundry and have same day service. There are several within a couple of blocks.

Nail Salons:

I went to Dyanna’s for years and still when I am in NYC I go there and see Rita who was my manicurist for over 10 years. Not a lavish place but clean and really good manis/pedis and waxings. All the manicurists are Russian ladies who have worked there for years.

Garages:

I never owned a car while I lived in NYC. I was the queen of public transportation. Never felt I needed a car in NY as I could get anywhere with Metro North, NJ Transit, The Long Island Railroad, Amtrak and the NYC subways and buses.

Wine shops:

Lots of wine shops I would go and just walk along 3^rd Avenue and walk in any one I passed.

Gyms:

There are lots of gyms. I belonged to a NYSC (not sure if it is still a NYSC) on the corner of 2^nd Avenue and 34^th Street ground level. The beauty of that club is the building it is in has a roof top in ground pool that that club members can use during the summer for a fee. I would come home from work in the summer and go up there for a swim it was the best…

Clothes Stores:

There are a bunch of cute boutiques on 3^rd Avenue and Lord & Taylors (I would go to Lord & Taylor’s every Saturday it was my ritual) is a short walk at 38^th and 5^th and there’s always Macy’s on 34^th. Bloomingdales is a short train or bus ride (I would walk weather permitting)

Post Office:

There is a post office on 34^th Street between Lexington and Park

Transportation:

Buses:

2^nd Avenue bus goes downtown to Wall Street but you can take it to the East Village where there are lots of fun restaurants and an artsy movie theater. Actually I would walk to the East Village but it’s nice to know you can take a bus.

34^th Street cross town bus: this bus starts at 1^st Avenue and 34^th Street and goes all the way to the west side. You can take this bus if you want to go to Macy’s. I would usually walk if the weather is nice.

3^rd Avenue bus: this bus goes uptown so if you want to go to the upper east side and not take the train you can take this bus.

Madison Avenue Bus: I love this bus line. It goes uptown and you get to see all the great Madison Avenue stores…lots of fun if you like window shopping. This is also the bus to take to all the museums on the upper east side. One of my favorite things to do in NYC.

Trains:

You have all the trains: 4,5,6, shuttle to the west side. You can get the local 6 train at 33^rd and Park or go to Grand Central for the 4,5, 6 and shuttle to the west side trains like the 2 or 3 for any Westside activities. You can also get the metro north at Grand Central and the Long Island Railroad, Njtransit and Amtrak are at Penn Station (if you want to go to Penn Station and don’t want to walk take the 34^th Street Cross town bus which will leave you one block from Penn Station.
